China's ONLY Drive-thru McDonalds

China has about a trillion McDonalds (rough estimate). But only ONE drive-thru, or so Tim thought, though not quite sure. Mr. Chen, our noble driver had never heard of such a thing. So we went out of our way just to try it out.

There wasn't a single car in front or behind us; and it was lunch time.

On our way though, our driver was nervous. "What do I do? What do I say? Where to I stop?" Perhaps this explained why we were the only car there. My jokester mind likes to think of all the possibilities going through his mind at this point. Maybe you drive to certain places signifying certain meal combos?

Not to worry, Mr. Chen. We have much experience in this area. Did you know the most common thing found in an car is a french fry (heard it on "Alice" morning radio show-- brain buster quiz... high quality education going on over here)?

Another interesting thing here... McDonalds in China serves up soup, fried chicken, and taro pies just to name a few.
UPDATE: On Sunday a family visited us from BeiJing. I politely engaged in the following conversation:
Me: "Hi, is this your first Sunday? Where are you from?"
Them: "BeiJing"
Me: (bit confused, they were American) "You live there?"
Them: "Yes, for two years"
Me: "Great. Do you know if they have a McDonalds Drive-thru?"
Them: "Yes we got our first one just a couple of months ago"
Me: "Great" (satisfied with the conversation, I ended it there. Who needs to know names when you've got new found info to impress your husband with).

This is great! One more place on our must-see-before-we-die list! McDonald's food with the convenience of not getting out of your car. What will China think of next? Actually, do you think drive-throughs are new because half the cars on the roads are first time drivers? You don't need a drive-through when you're on a bike. Here a bike is just an extention of your feet! Progress comes one step at a time...but it's about time McDonald's caught up with progress!!

I think this is my favorite post ever. Okay maybe not, you've had some great ones...but this is CLASSIC!! I was laughing out loud at Mr. Chen being so nervous - but heck, can't blame him! He didn't grow up with it like we did. FUNNY!! Where was it? I told Ken about it and he wants to go.

I remember how good McDonald's tasted when we were in Guangzhou! I think that the regulate their food so it is the same world wide. I did still like the "real" Chinese food better though. Are you getting excited for CNY? Miss you!

Suzanne, I haven't commented for a while. Your hair is amazing. The boys are getting so big! Congratulations on the adoption progress! Thank you for the Christmas card.

I was reading the recap from the Relief Society lesson today and there you were! I enjoyed your participation in class as usual - nice insightful comments.

I am enjoying my calling in Primary. The kids are great and I teach with Sara Warnick.

It's been about a year now since you moved. I certainly miss you and I am happy to see that you are loving living in China.

I remember being in Belgium and eating at McDonalds - I was so happy because it felt so familiar, but afterwards I was ashamed that with the limited time I had there, I was eating a really bad cheeseburger!

Oh poor Mr. Chen, he sounds a lot like my dad, who ironically grew up with drive-thru restaurants. He always pulls forward, rolls down the back window, and lets someone else in the car order. It is too much of an ordeal for him otherwise. LOL
