Who Cut It? Delmy, You'll Appreciate This One

Street vendors sell these roasted yams/sweet potatoes and they are unbeatable. First, the temperature is high on these babies, and they have skin to protect the inner meat. This makes it safe enough for me to share with friends; without fearing I'm going to give them the runs. Nice of me, eh?

Not everyone has an intestinal tract of steel (call it one of my millions of benefits of serving a mission in Taiwan).

Then Mr. Chen proceeds to share with me "this vegetable is very good for your body" in Chinese.

And then on to a word "tongqi".

I'd never heard this word before, but based on the tones, I figured it was something along the lines of 'pass through' for the 'tong' part, and 'air' for the 'qi 'part. The above is him trying to explain it to me (what, I was camera happy that day). His brain was trying to download the English translation (we've been working on his English with him). My brain downloading as well. Then Mr. Chen's invisible light bulb goes off before mine and he says...

"Who cut the cheese?"

Really, for a guy who barely can pronounce his own English name ("Lance"), where does he come up with this stuff? After this, I'm going to tell Tim he's earned an English last name. --Grannis--.

I love your driver! I would love to get my hands on some of those babies. Delicious and entertaining-it doesn't get better than that (the yams).

Thank you for highlighting probably my favorite "healthy" street food! Love it! Our friend joked (ok, she was serious) that since her roommate was out of town, she ate a lot of sweet potatoes so she could "toot for two days" without offending anyone. That comes out so much funnier in Chinese...

Suzanne,
I thought I would introduce myself to you. I have been "stalking" your blog since December. I don't remember whose blog I picked yours up off of, but it is fascinating to see your life in China.
I hope you don't mind that I continue to "stalk", since your blog is public I assumed it was OK. We are an LDS family living in SLC, UT - so it's nice to see other members around the world.
