Top of the Mornin' to ya

You never know what kids pick up on. When Hunter went through his "Parrot" phase (where they repeat any two-syllable word they hear as toddlers) I tried to be a more cautious parent. I was determined to change all of my favorite road rage words while he was in the car. I didn't think I was doing all that bad until one day, while taking him for a walk, he was pointing at every car and calling out "Bevis".

On the flip, there are pluses of those little eavesdroppers. Hunter goes to a bi-lingual Montessori (thank you GMAC) out here, and is on the waiting list for the all-chinese class. With him currently in the english class, all of his teachers have been greeting him in english, despite my chinese "Zao Shang Hao" (good morning in chinese) efforts.

The other day, when pulling up, Hunter got out and boldly greeted everyone with "Zao Shang Hao!" You should've seen their eyes pop. They all crouched down to his eye level and just adored him. I was surprised myself.

He also has been telling Tanner, a little too often, "Bu Xing!!" (chinese for "no").

He does have one advantage to being in the english class for now-- his classmates are chinese. On the playground, he has picked up on just enough to hold his own, for now anyway. He still gets confused and will say a whole sentence in jibberish adding "Mommy, do you know what I just said in chinese?"

I will try to post a video of a kid's song he's learned recently.

Go, Hunter! Little kids are amazing little sponges for picking up on languages!! You guys are giving him such an advantage by teaching him Chinese while he's still so young and malleable.
