Just outside of where I buy fruits and veggies, you can find all kinds of specialties.
The bear paw sells for $300. I didn't ask about the others. They weren't too happy with some whitie comin' up with a camera. They told me they were from some tribe here in China that has hunting rights. They were a bit defensive. Like I was some official or something. What, with my baby in tote??
What. No need to freak.
Didn't they know, I'm just a blogger, that's all.

So, being the environmental nerd that I am, I learned that certain bear parts are used for aphrodisiacs in China, and that people will poach bears in the US to sell these very expensive parts to Asia. They kill the poor bear, cut off its paws and a few other things, and leave the rest. So yeah, I bet they were a bit nervous since most governments don't take too kindly to poaching. You could have been the under-cover FBI agent posing as a sweet mom! There's a good novel for ya. And I thought the soup thing was funny. I would laugh.
Bear paws...I was all excited to find a good donut shop that sells bear paws!
When my brother was a missionary in Ecuador, he and his companion were always being asked if they were undercover agents.... he'd say that he would talk into the tip of his pen and inpress all the little kids on the bus.
So that had nothing to do with your story. But then again, your story had nothing to do with donuts. (sniff)
